An Evening of Inspiration

On December 10, the JRCC West Thornhill hosted a vibrant 19 Kislev Farbrengen, marking the Festival of Liberation and the Rosh Hashanah of Chassidus. This day commemorates the release of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad, from Czarist imprisonment – an event regarded as a historic turning point that led to the widespread flourishing of Chassidic teachings and communities. Community members gathered for a full buffet dinner, song, and an inspiring address by guest speaker Rabbi Dov Greenberg, renowned for his insights into Jewish thought and spirituality. The evening captured the spirit, warmth, and enduring significance of this historic day.

38th Annual Public Menorah Lighting

The JRCC’s 37th Annual Public Menorah Lighting took place on December 15 at Mel Lastman Square, drawing over 300 community members, local residents, and passersby. Due to the shooting attack at Chanukah festivities in Bondi Beach, Australia the previous day, the JRCC was held in solidarity with the Australian Jewish community. The festive evening featured a live performance by Israeli musician Barak Grossberg, children’s entertainment, refreshments, and the lighting of a towering 13-foot menorah in front of City Hall. The celebration was further honored by the presence of municipal, provincial, and federal representatives, whose participation and warm remarks underscored the spirit of unity, light, and pride that defines Chanukah in our community.

Chanukah Wonderland Carnival

The JRCC’s 21st Annual Chanukah Wonderland brought a full day of excitement and family fun to the Lebovic Campus in Maple on Sunday, December 14. Held at the Schwartz/Reisman Centre, the event welcomed over 2,000 participants who enjoyed an engaging mix of performances by local clowns, magicians, and jugglers, along with rides, carnival games, crafts, and hands-on workshops such as menorah making and an olive press experience. Live music added to the festive atmosphere. The JRCC extends sincere thanks to the staff, volunteers, and partner organizations whose dedication made this memorable community celebration possible.

JRCC's Annual Book Sale

In celebrating the power of Jewish books, the JRCC held a storewide book sale through its online bookstore, offering 10% off all purchases in honor of 5 Tevet. This date marks the historic “Victory of the Books,” commemorating the 1987 court ruling that affirmed the Chabad library as a communal treasure, settling a dispute over ownership and access to the invaluable books and manuscripts in the library. You can shop Jewish books online anytime at jrccbookstore.org.
