POST - PASSOVER CHALLAH BAKE

Passover tradition of Shlissel Challah was celebrated simultaneously across eight JRCC branches following Passover last month. While challah baking gatherings take place throughout the year and are a meaningful source of communal blessing and support, the post-Passover edition is regarded as especially auspicious. The custom involves incorporating a key in various forms – some bake it into the dough, others imprint or pierce the challah with a key, and some shape the challah itself like a key. The symbolism reflects the idea of divine blessings flowing through “gates” of mercy, healing, forgiveness, and sustenance. In this context, the key represents a prayer that these gates be opened, with the challah serving as a symbolic key to blessings for the Jewish people.

11 NISSAN CELEBRATION

On March 29, communities around the world marked 11 Nissan, the birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, born in 1902 in Nikolaev.

His leadership continues to inspire a global Jewish renaissance and remains a central force in Jewish life and connection, including within the JRCC community. To mark the occasion, the JRCC held a farbrengen (Chassidic gathering) at JRCC East Thornhill. Participants came together for an evening of unity, reflection, inspiring words of Torah, and heartfelt Chassidic song, celebrating the Rebbe’s ongoing impact and vision.

PASSOVER SEDERS

The Passover Seder is a central Jewish ritual, observed in nearly identical form by Jews around the world, regardless of affiliation or level of observance. It is the defining reenactment of the Jewish people’s defining experience: the Exodus from Egypt. On April 1 and 2, over 500 participants joined Community Passover Seders organized by the Jewish Russian Community Centre across 10 locations. The Seders offered participants the opportunity to experience a traditional Seder in a warm, welcoming setting, together with family and friends, while fulfilling the mitzvot of the evening, including eating matzah and recounting the story of the Exodus to the next generation. The guidance and explanations of the presiding rabbis added depth and meaning, while singing and shared camaraderie created a joyful and uplifting holiday atmosphere.
