In the Chabad-Lubavitch community, the 5th day of the Hebrew month of Tevet is marked as a most special and joyous day — celebrating the "Victory of the Sefarim", the victory of the Torah books.
On this date in 1987, a U.S. Federal Court ruled that the sacred library housed at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, NY, belonged not to any one individual, but to the entire Chabad-Lubavitch community — and by extension, to all who study from it.
— Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka
The Rebbe saw this not only as a victory for Chabad, but as a victory for the Jewish people and for the Torah itself — a reminder that the true completion of a Sefer Torah is when its words live on through the books we learn and share.
In keeping with the Rebbe's guidance, Chabad communities celebrate the 5th of Tevet with joyous farbrengens and special book sales — encouraging everyone to fill their homes with Jewish books and their lives with Torah learning.
How to Celebrate 5 Tevet
- Build Up: Strengthen your personal library of Jewish books. Visit the JRCC Bookstore to explore Jewish books in English and Russian.
- Spread Out: The Rebbe emphasized using this time to expand Torah and mitzvot. Every Jewish home can become a "Chabad House" — a warm space filled with light and inspiration.
- Reach In: Use this auspicious time to reconnect with your inner soul and the Rebbe's teachings. You can visit the Ohel or send a letter online to be placed there.
