Avraham Janko
Driving Instructor, Thornhill
Where is your family from, and how long have you live in Ontario?
My parents are from Moldova, but they lived and met in Chisinau, Romania. My wife and I arrived in Ontario from Israel in 1985, and moved to Thornhill in 1990.
Why did you choose to live in Thornhill?
We chose to make our home in Thornhill because it has a very active Jewish community. My wife and I wanted our children to grow up in a Jewish environment.
What do you do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies?
I love the outdoors. In my spare time I like to spend time riding my motorcycle and boat. I enjoy fishing.
If you were given the opportunity to meet anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose, and why?
I would like to sit for a friendly chat with Benjamin Netanyahu. In a face-to-face conversation, when you look into someone’s eyes, you can see what a person is really thinking, what he wants... because the eyes do not lie. Then I would know what position the government of Israel really holds.
When did you begin participating in JRCC programs?
From the earliest days of our life in Canada, in June 1985, we met with Rabbi Zalzman and began to participate both directly or indirectly in the community and its programs. I appreciate the importance of the JRCC’s programs to the community, and my family very much enjoys taking part in them.
What are your future plans?
I want to flourish, enjoy life, and, most importantly, to do everything I can, in a peaceful way, for the prosperity of Israel and all Jews, regardless of where they live. We are all one people. When world Jewry is doing well, we are all doing well. I wish everyone would appreciate this fact.
