Music Engineer

North York

Please tell us about your career.

I work as an engineer at the No Excuses Studios for Interscope Records (a division of Universal Music) in Santa Monica, California. I started recording music and working in the music industry at the age of 16, and last year I graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the top music schools in the world.

What kind of music does your studio record?

No Excuses Studios primarily records music in the Urban Hip-Hop and Pop genres. We work with several famous artists, including Selena Gomez, Kendrick Lamar, Skulba Kew, Gwen Stefani, Carly Ray Jepsen and Mike Will.

What is it like working with these famous musicians?

I'm incredibly lucky that I met such masters. They are extremely devoted to their craft, and being around them serves as a motivation for me to work hard and succeed in my own career.

When did you start playing music?

I began playing music when I was only three years old. I would watch my older sister's lessons, and I also reached for the instrument. For as long as I can remember, I always did something that was directly related to music. My childhood was basically full of music lessons, and I remember sitting for hours playing different instruments. I had private teachers in vocals, piano, guitar, and saxophone. I was also engaged in ballroom dances, and participated in festive events in different clubs. My warmest childhood memories are associated with performances at various festivals, where I sang and danced. At the age of 16, I became interested in jazz and decided to move in that direction. But, after studying for a year at Berklee College of Music in Boston, I decided to specialize in Music Production and Engineering, which is what I'm currently doing.

Where does your family come from?

My family is a tremendous source of inspiration for me. My relatives always support me in everything. I feel incredible fortunate to be born into a wonderful family of such amazing people. My relatives came to Canada from Moldova in the early 1990s. I was born here and was the first Canadian in the family. I grew up in a Jewish home where family values were traditionally honored. My numerous relatives encourage strong family ties, always helping each other in every possible way.

What do you do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies?

I like to spend my free time with family and friends. I began to appreciate family much more when I started studying far from home and especially now that I work in another country. I like to read, play piano, go for walks, watch interesting films, and go to concerts. In addition to music, I also enjoy sports and am an avid sports fan, which I like to watch live at the stadiums. and in my free time I go to the stadium to watch sports. I also enjoy biking and swimming.

Who is your hero?

My heroes are my parents. They made tremendous efforts to educate me to be balanced, to be a man who never forgets his roots. They always helped me move forward in all my endeavors. I was always fascinated by the courage and determination with which they left their home in the Soviet Union and went to a completely different world, so that their children could live in a prosperous country. I am proud of my parents and very grateful to them for the life they created for me.

Do you participate in JRCC programs? What do they mean to you and your family?

I very much enjoy participating in the JRCC’s holiday programs. We have a remarkable Jewish community in the North York area, of which I am very proud to be part of.

What are your future plans?

My immediate plans are to continue developing and improving in my specialty, to build a career in the music industry, and to expand my professional network. I hope  to one day take a leading role at a major record label.
