Bat mitzvah is Hebrew for "daughter of commandment." When a Jewish girl turns 12, she has all the rights and obligations of a Jewish adult, including the commandments of the Torah.
As an important member of our community, the JRCC put together for you a unique package of Jewish items that are important and a source of blessing for every Jewish girl to have.
You are now turning 11 years old! Mazal tov! This is a very exciting birthday. Next year you reach the great milestone – your Bat Mitzvah.
Your 11th birthday is a perfect time to start preparing to become Bat Mitzvah. To learn of both the tremendous privilege and responsibilities of becoming Bat Mitzvah. Specifically, it is a good time to learn about our holidays and heroes, to discuss what it means to be a Jew, and what steps you could take, to dedicate yourself to the ideals and beliefs of our people. 1. A Siddur, with English translation – Prayer is at the very core of Judaism, our obligation and ability to communicate with our Creator. The Siddur contains all the prayers and blessings you will need.
2. A Tzedakah (Charity) Box – Expressing kindness is a fundamental value of our people. Your elegant Tzedakah box can be placed in a visible location to serve as a reminder to give charity on a regular basis.
3. Shabbos Candlesticks & Candles – Lighting Shabbos candles is one of the most beautiful and meaningful mitzvos entrusted to Jewish women and girls. By kindling the Shabbos lights, you bring warmth, peace, and holiness into your home while welcoming the sanctity of Shabbos. Your beautiful candlesticks and candles will help you begin this special mitzvah with joy and pride.
4. Shabbos Candle Lighting Times Card – This handy card provides the Shabbos candle-lighting times for the upcoming year, making it easy to know exactly when to light your candles each Friday and on Jewish holidays.
5. Bat Mitzvah Guide – This unique guide introduces you to the meaning and traditions of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. You'll discover the significance of this important milestone, learn about the special mitzvos of Jewish women, and prepare for an inspiring Bat Mitzvah journey.
