DAYCARE RENOVATION COMPLETED

The JRCC recently received a $55,000 grant to renovate its acclaimed, city-recognized Preschool and Daycare. The facility received a face-lift in the form of repainting all the walls, as well as new floors, new cabinets and counters, and new washrooms. Children and staff beginning the new year will be treated to a fresh and more functional facility, which will only enhance the amazing atmosphere and quality of the program.

20 AV FARBRENGENS

The 20th of Av (Shabbat, August 12, 2017) marked the yahrtzeit of the Rebbe’s father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Schneerson, a kabbalist and activist who devoted his life, and ultimately gave up his life, to preserving Judaism in the FSU. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav (currently Dnepropetrovsk), and was arrested and exiled to Kazakhstan by the Stalinist regime as a result of his work to preserve Jewish life in the Soviet Union. The day was celebrated with farbrengens, Chassidic gatherings for special occasions, at all JRCC branches. Farbrengens generally consist of words of wisdom and encouragement, song and great food in an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie where people empower one another to overcome their challenges and grow.

SUMMER JOBS AT JRCC

Thanks to a summer jobs grant from the Canadian Government, the JRCC was able to hire ten students to assist with various tasks at the JRCC Head Office. Not only did this add much-needed manpower to the JRCC to catch up on administrative work on behalf of the community, it also provided the students with a constructive and structured summer, as well as valuable work experience. The students performed various tasks like visiting community members, making phone calls, correcting data, sorting returned mail/emails, scanning old files, and updating the JRCC website. One student was tasked with scanning old community photos to create a digital photo album of photos going all the way back to 1980, which we hope to make available online in the near future. Thank you to the students for their hard work, to the JRCC staff for directing their work, and to the Government of Canada for the grant that made it possible.

HIGH HOLIDAYS COMING SOON

The High Holidays are right around the corner and are approaching fast. Rosh Hashanah falls on September 20-22, 2017, and Yom Kippur falls on September 29-30. Services will be held at nine locations in the GTA. Like last year, the JRCC is using a redesigned High Holiday ticket that serves as a guide featuring a detailed schedule for the entire month of Tishrei, covering all the holidays from Rosh Hashana to Simchat Torah – all in one place. Everyone is welcome to join the programs and services at any time, but seating for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur is limited, so please reserve your seats as soon as possible. To reserve your seats, call 416.222.7105, visit jrcc.org/highholidays, or drop by the JRCC office (the office is open M-F 9am-6pm and Sunday 12-5pm).
