NEW TORAH STUDIES SESSIONS

The JRCC’s Institute of Jewish Studies launched a new semester of the weekly Torah Studies series at the East Thornhill and South Thornhill branches (on Tuesday evenings at 8:00). Torah Studies brings you the tradition of classical Jewish learning in a series of clear and engaging weekly classes. Probing the ideas and issues presented in each week’s Torah portion, the Torah Studies classes offer timely lessons for living – from the most timeless of all texts. Torah Studies takes you through the yearly cycle of the Five Books of Moses, introducing you to new planes in spiritual, social and self-awareness – one week at a time. Check out all the learning opportunities at jrcc.org/ijs.

NEW AND IMPROVED YAHRZEIT CARDS

Each month, the JRCC sends out thousands of Yahrzeit reminders. Starting last month, a new, user-friendly card replaced the previous simple letters. The new cards are personalized to include the date of the Yahrzeit, suggested customs to observe, and the special Kaddish prayer. All those who were receiving Yahrzeit letters until now, will automatically start receiving the new cards instead. To add a new departed relative for yourself, a family member or a friend, please call 416.222.7105, email jrcc@jrcc.org, or visit jrcc.org/yahrzeit.

CELEBRATING 5 TEVET

On January 2, the community marked the auspicious day of 5 Tevet, the day in 1987 that the US Federal Court rules in favor of Chabad regarding the ownership of a priceless library of Chassidic manuscripts. As the Rebbe described, this event had profound spiritual significance, so it was celebrated with a farbrengen, a Chassidic gathering, that was attended by several dozen people at the Zaltzman residence in Thornhill.

PASSOVER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Even though we’re still in the throes of winter and Purim has not yet arrived, the Passover festival, which requires huge amounts of preparation, is coming soon. Volunteers are needed to help share the joy of Passover, including delivering shmura matzah packages to each of the 14,000+ homes in our community – a massive undertaking made possible by dedicated volunteers. Please contact the JRCC office to sign up to deliver packages in your neighborhood.

PASSOVER FOOD DRIVE

The Annual Passover Food Drive organized by the National Council for Jewish Women begins receiving applications this month. Each year, hundreds of families receive assistance for the Passover holiday in the form of holiday food packages, which in the past was run in conjunction with the JRCC. If you or anyone you know is in need, please see the ad on page 15 for details.
