 Free Tax Assistance

During the upcoming tax season, the Jewish Russian Community Centre will be offering a free program to prepare income tax returns for members of the community who are unable to afford the services of an income tax professional. There will be a limited number of spaces in this program, and JRCC is not looking to take business away from professional service providers, so only community members who are in need are urged to utilize this free service.

The program will be administered by Mr. Michael Kaplan B.Com. CPA CA.  Mr Kaplan is a retired Chartered Accountant with over 45 years experience in public accounting and income tax preparation. He helped run similar programs for a First Nation's Women's Shelter for about 7 years, and is now generously offering to provide his professional services to members of the Jewish Russian community.

“It is important that each person meet his legal obligation to file a tax return,” explains Mr. Kaplan. “The preparation rules are complex.  There is a wide variety of government subsidies and payouts (known as “Refundable Credits”) available to individuals who file their return correctly and professionally, covering things such as rent, property tax, home care assistance, HST refunds, and child support. These benefits can only be received if a proper tax return is filed.”

The returns will be prepared using Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) approved Income Tax computer programs and they will be filed electronically thus ensuring immediate acceptance by the CRA with a rapid refund of any tax or credit balance.  The preparation of each return will be done in professionally and in private. All information will be treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality. The program will be also able to accommodate late filers for prior years.

A tax professional will available by appointment only at the JRCC office on Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm to 8:30pm and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 4:00pm, from February 25 to April 30, except during Passover. An appointment is necessary in order to coordinate the necessary preparations. After your appointment is confirmed, you will be provided with a list of the documents to bring with you. To schedule an appointment or for more information, please call 416-222.7105 as soon as possible, as space is limited.
